VADs as well as Blood Pressure (Hopefully) September 24, 2008
Posted by janon672002 in : Uncategorized , add a commentYour letters to your field placements are due! I should find them on your blog!
Today we may have a guest speaker, Dr. Charles Murphy, who will talk to us about valve replacement as well as the use of VADs (he will explain). This is fairly high tech stuff for cardiovascular medicine.
Next, we will work on learning about blood pressure as it is a key predictor for heart disease. lab-activity-3-blood-pressure-manual-method-12 . The second document we may or may not get to: lab-activity-4-blood-pressure-vernier-probe .
First, what is high blood pressure. Please take notes! :
HW: As homework you must interview a family member for 5 minutes regarding any high blood pressure or heart disease in your family. We will brainstorm questions. Use Audacity as a means to record them. Make sure that the microphone on your computer is working and that you are keeping their voice at about -12 db.
-Questions (You do not have to use these. Make sure to introduce your guest on the file and thank them for participating in the interview.):
1.)
2.)
3.)
4.)
5.)
Writing E-mails to Our Field Placements September 22, 2008
Posted by janon672002 in : Uncategorized , add a commentToday each of us needs to write a letter of personal interest to our field placements and express that we would like to visit next week if possible- on Wed. at 2:00. The one exception is Bill and Cameron who will be mtg. in the evening.
1. First address the field placement contact by the proper name. Thank them for taking the time to participate in the program.
2. In your e-mail letter, introduce yourself. What grade level are you? What got you interested in taking the AMTP class. What classes related to Biology/Chemistry have you taken? Summer Camps?
3. Express why you are interested in working with them and in their field. You may include personal information here to describe your interest. You may need to do some research to talk intelligently about what you are interested in learning about.
4. Explain that you are eager to get started. Karenna and James, you need to arrange to go together next Wed. if possible to get your UNC Hipaa training. This will get you prepared for the next visit. Karenna, you have to have this to move forward with Dr. Phillips. Again, try to arrange to meet at 2:00 on next Wed. but if you can not, shoot for Tuesday at some time that will work for you. If you need to schedule during another AMTP class, just let me know.
5. Thank them again and say you look forward to hearing from them.
———–
Karenna- duncan_phillips@med.unc.edu, he is interested in knowing what you would like to study and why, it might also be helpful to give him some of your personal background/interest. Explain that you will be going through Hipaa training next week and then will be ready to go.
Camden- See me.
Robert- ASchaberg@inspirepharm.com, address as Ms. Schaberg (VP of Operations). Follow the above writing strategy.
Bill and Cameron- jsierra@wakeradiology.com, Dr. Sierra, neuroradiology, Follow the above writing strategy and each of you should write a different letter. You could go at the same time if it will work out. He can usually meet at around 6 pm or so.
James- Dr. Gordon, UNC, kg_gordon@earthlink.net, ophthalmology, follow the guidelines above. You will be going through use of a slit lamp, clinical assessment and diagnosis, and express your interest in seeing at least a bit of surgery.
Kayvan-
Kista.hurley@va.gov (Ms. Hurley) and
WRITE ALL E-MAILS AS BLOG ENTRIES. I WILL LOOK THEM OVER.
Next we will begin exploring heart sounds and blood pressure. lab-activity-3-blood-pressure-manual-method-1
Spirometry Experiments September 17, 2008
Posted by janon672002 in : Uncategorized , add a commentYour explanations of spirometry on the AMTP Wiki are due on Friday. If you did not do these you will receive a zero for this homework assignment. Please address each discussion point.
We will have a quest on Friday.
We will do our spirometry experiment today! First we will put together a PowerPoint that explains the main spirometry values that are measured. Then we will perform the experiment in groups of two. We will print out each persons final reading.
1.) There is a delay prior to pushing start on the Vernier probes.
2.) While holding the spirometer absolutely horizontal, each “patient” should take 4 normal breaths with the nose plug on, followed by as deep of inspiration as you can take and as great of exhalation as you can make.
3.) Push stop. Print.
4. Minute Breathing Test
————
Answer the following questions on your blog.
What was your Tidal Volume (TV)? What would you expect your TV to be if you inhaled a foreign object which completely obstructed your right mainstem bronchus?
2. Describe the difference between lung volumes for males and females. What might account for this?
3. Calculate your Minute Volume at rest.
(TV ´ breaths/minute) = Minute Volume at rest
If you are taking shallow breaths (TV = 0.20 L) to avoid severe pain from rib fractures, what respiratory rate will be required to achieve the same minute volume?
4. Exposure to occupational hazards such as coal dust, silica dust, and asbestos may lead to fibrosis, or scarring of lung tissue. With this condition, the lungs become stiff and have more “recoil.” What would happen to TLC and VC under these conditions?
5. In severe emphysema there is destruction of lung tissue and reduced recoil. What would you expect to happen to TLC and VC?
6. What would you expect to happen to your Expiratory Reserve Volume when you are treading water in a lake?

Posted by janon672002 in : Uncategorized , add a commentFirst of all, our class wiki will be at: http://amtp.wikispaces.com/
Some of you did not complete the blog entries for last week (assigned on Friday). I am afraid you will receive a zero for these. For those of you who did complete the Sheep Pluck dissection blog entry- great! Also, Camden and Kayvan, great job on your first entries for your field placement.
This week we will be working on Spirometry through the wiki. I have posted numerous questions in the discussion of the wiki. Please subscribe to the wiki (first you need an account) then go to amtp.wikispaces.com. Choose “join this space”. Go to the projects portion of the wiki. Click on Spirometry. Go to the discussion and begin answering questions here. Make sure to include citations.
Here are the questions in the discussion of the wiki…
What is Spirometry?
What is it used for?
What are its limitations?
When is it used?
What kind of technology is out there and currently being used?
What is measured? Define these items.
Provide an example spirometer reading and explain it.

Sheep Pluck Dissection September 10, 2008
Posted by janon672002 in : Uncategorized , add a commentHopefully you have survived the sheep pluck dissection!
Now for a few questions. In paragraph format answer the following prompts.
What was the most interesting aspect of the sheep pluck dissection for you and why?
It is now more common than ever to do lung transplants and even lung resections (removal of parts of a lung). Do a bit of research and find out why these types of procedures have to be done. For what diseases?
Pulmonary medicine is a entire medical specialty in itself. Name one disease that you are interested in and write a paragraph about it. What causes it? What is its treatment? How many people a yer are afflicted with it or die from it.
Make sure to cite your sources using MLA format- use Son of Citation Maker!
